Principal Judge Abodo Praises ADR Use During Kajjansi High Court Monitoring Visit

The Principal Judge, Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo has conducted a monitoring visit to the ongoing High Court criminal session at Kajjansi as part of her supervisory mandate to assess the administration of justice.

Upon arrival, Lady Justice Abodo was received by the presiding judge, Justice Karoli Lwanga Ssemogerere, who briefed her on the progress of the session and ongoing efforts to improve case handling.

Justice Ssemogerere commended the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms and improved witness management as key strategies in enhancing timely disposal of cases, noting that these efforts were contributing to improved efficiency in the session.

“The session is progressing well, with deliberate efforts being made to promote Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and improve witness handling, both of which are critical in ensuring timely disposal of cases,” Justice Ssemogerere said.

Lady Justice Abodo commended Justice Ssemogerere for his innovative and proactive approach to case management, particularly highlighting his pre-trial prison visits and stakeholder pre-trial meetings, which she said were improving efficiency in the justice process.

Lady Justice Abodo also appreciated the Kajjansi Chief Magistrate’s Court for providing a conducive environment for the effective conduct of the criminal session.

The Assistant Registrar of Entebbe High Court, Rashida Butanula, informed the Principal Judge that 48 cases were cause-listed for the session, of which 12 have so far been disposed of.

The Chief Magistrate of Kajjansi, Doreen Olga Karungi, reported that the court began the day with 497 cases, including a backlog of 35. She also highlighted operational challenges affecting service delivery, including the lack of a station vehicle and insufficient clerical staff.

The monitoring visit was also attended by Magistrates Grade I from Kajjansi, who observed the proceedings and engaged in the review of the ongoing criminal session.
